The Life and Legends of the Plains come to life at this extraordinary small town museum which features the Limon Depot, Exhibit Building, and Railroad Park.
Together, these attractions comprise our Museum Complex, a free and open-to-the-public journey supported by the Limon Heritage Society.
Adventure is waiting for every member of your family in Limon’s Heritage Museum & Railroad Park. The 1910 Limon Depot, restored and maintained by Heritage Society volunteers, is a community treasure recently placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Formerly a “Union” depot servicing both Rock Island and Union Pacific railroads, it has become an anticipated stop for tourists and a much-loved reminder of the rich history of this “Hub City.”

The Limon Depot houses our town’s extensive Houtz Native American Collection and the permanent “Trains on the Plains” exhibit.
Don’t miss the restored railroad office, working N scale model of Limon’s 1940s rail yard, and the intriguing photo essay, “Growing Up in the 1930s.” Share the ranching heritage as you explore the Prairie monument, Western Saddle Boxcar, and walk back in time through the one-room schoolhouse, rail dining car, and Union Pacific Caboose.
The Railroad Park, adjacent to the Limon Depot, reveals high plains agricultural history with antique machinery and vintage windmills. Our playground, gardens, and picnic tables are open all year for Limon visitors.
The Exhibit Building interior is a stunning addition to the Museum’s display areas, and it clearly depicts the Life and Legends of the Plains. Check out the old-time store, barbershop, and prairie kitchen. Count the plows, view the current show in the changing exhibit gallery, and spend some time at Limon’s famous weather station. Marvel at the full-size Cheyenne Tipi and peek in the antique sheepherder’s wagon! Other acclaimed exhibits include fine vintage photography accenting “Growing Wheat” and dramatic scenes of area ranching through the 1940s.
The Hub City of the Eastern Plains is Limon, Colorado. Follow historic Route 40 as it highlights Limon’s Main Street on the south side of town, running right by the modern Kyle and Union Pacific railroads. Call 719-775-9418 for details about our new and changing exhibits and events.
The Limon Heritage Museum Complex is supported by the Limon Heritage Society, a 501C (3) not-for-profit volunteer organization formed in 1990 to preserve and promote the history of the Colorado plains.
